Actor-Filmmaker Conservatory at Actors Studio Stockholm

Become an actor creating your own work.

This is an 18-month intensive Film Acting & Filmmaking Conservatory where students deepen their acting skills in front of the camera while learning the entire filmmaking process – from scriptwriting and casting to directing, shooting and post-production – and making three short films of their own.

The Film Acting & Filmmaking Conservatory is a program for artists who want to deepen their acting in front of the camera while learning to create their own original films. The program focuses on developing a broad range of expression, strengthening camera techniques, and providing a deep understanding of the demands of film and television acting. Through a conservatory-style acting training combined with hands-on filmmaking, students work on the entire storytelling process – from scripting and casting to budgeting, scheduling, shotlists, cinematography, directing, shooting and post-production, including editing, color, sound, music and visual effects – within a structured curriculum that promotes long-term artistic development and professional discipline.

The program is led by experienced professional actors and educators, as well as directors, casting directors, cinematographers and actors working in film and television. The program is also enriched by invited guest teachers and lecturers. Classes run Monday to Friday and allow students to develop at their own pace within a stable and consistent schedule where creativity, professionalism and collaboration are at the center.

During the course, students complete three original short films that they have written, directed and acted in themselves. This results in a solid on-camera material and a coherent portfolio of work. The goal of the Conservatory program is to provide a strong foundation in film acting, practical understanding of the industry, and meaningful opportunities for creative collaboration and professional connections.

Film acting

For those who want to work primarily in front of the camera rather than on stage, Film Acting offers a focused and practical pathway. The program provides a solid foundation in acting for film and television, with a particular focus on developing camera presence, technical awareness and confidence in professional production environments. Students learn to adapt their expression for the camera, understand how acting choices change between different genres and become comfortable working on set with a full film crew.

Acting for film requires different tools than stage work. During the program, students work with camera angles, framing, sound and lighting, and explore how these elements affect both performance and storytelling. The program is led by experienced actors and educators and also includes classes with invited professionals, such as actors, directors and casting directors, who share practical experiences from the film and TV industry. These perspectives provide students with a clearer understanding of the industry’s working processes and expectations, as well as valuable context for their own artistic development.

The film acting program is led by American actor JD Glickman, Swedish actors Joakim Nätterqvist(Arn, Beck, Ronja Rövardotter) and Ulrika Nilsson(Knutby, Färjan), and Irish actress Tara Maguire. Filmmaker trainers include Alexander Moberg and cinematographer Annika Aschberg(Bäckström, Thicker than Water). Guest teachers include casting director Sara Törnqvist(Partisan, Young Royals) and guest director.

Aim of the training

The aim of the training is to further develop the participant’s skills as an actor with a focus on working in front of the camera, while integrating acting training with the practical filmmaking process. Through work on script development, rehearsal, shooting and post-production, participants deepen their understanding of film acting and how performance works within the overall film. The aim is to strengthen both artistic and technical skills for work in film and TV production.

Content of the training

The training offers participants the opportunity to broaden and deepen their acting skills through several interlinked modules, with a clear emphasis on working in front of the camera and on learning acting in a practical film context. Acting training is integrated with the creative and technical processes of film production, giving participants a deeper understanding of how acting works in scripted scenes, camera set-ups and in collaboration within a film crew. Through continuous work in front of the camera, participants develop the ability to adapt their expression to the specific demands of the camera over time.

Teaching is led by educators who are professional actors and trainers, as well as film and TV practitioners, and is complemented by teaching with directors and other film professionals. As part of the training, participants will be involved in the creation of a short film and participate in the entire process – from preparation to shooting and post-production – resulting in concrete on-camera material from the course work.

In summary, the program offers an extensive number of teacher-led teaching hours in front of the camera over two semesters, supporting both artistic development and practical understanding of film acting within the filmmaking process.

Antagningsprov 1

Eligibility for the course requires specific prior knowledge. Test 1 is used to determine your ability to benefit from the training. Competition 1 consists of recording a video of you performing a monologue and submitting it to us. Please read carefully all the instructions on how to do this. It is possible to record with a mobile phone camera. You choose ONE of the monologues below in Swedish or English. In addition, you can also choose your own two-minute monologue and record it in either Swedish or English.

Instructions for the filmed monologue:

  • Memorize the text
  • You may not change, delete or add to the text.
  • You must not have a co-star, i.e. any other person, in the movie.
  • You do not need to worry about the gender for which the role was originally written. Your monologue can last a maximum of 2 minutes.
  • Record the movie as if you were in front of an audience. Make sure you are seen and heard well. It should be a filmed stage test, theater rather than film. You can look straight into the camera.
  • The film must consist of one take in its entirety. It must not be cut, edited, zoomed in or have any special effects.
  • The camera must be completely still and should film you from the front.
  • Make sure you are visible and audible on the video.

Antagningsprov 2

MOVEMENT

Competition 2 requires you to make a video in which you work with the body and its expression. You will create a coherent sequence of movements with abstract shapes that can look like anything in principle, but which has a clear narrative with a beginning, middle and end, and which involves the whole body. DO NOT ACT OUT A SCENE WHERE YOU ARE DOING SOMETHING OBVIOUS – for example, getting dressed, exercising, brushing your teeth, etc. Again, it should be ABSTRACT in nature – it can be a choreography or different movements that follow each other.

Make sure that the whole body is visible in the image, and the sequence should be a maximum of 30 seconds long. Do not use voice or music.

Step 1: Upload your filmed monologue on Youtube and make it unlisted. The privacy setting unlisted means that only you and the person you choose to share the link with can see the movie. Other people will not be able to find the movie, either on Youtube or via search engines. Please take a look at this instructional video on how to upload and make your movie unlisted on Youtube: https://youtu.be/JOr7JluzEOM

Step 2: Name your movie
Name your movie after your first and last name and the title of the monologue.

Step 3: Send it to us
Copy your link from YouTube into a Word document and write the script you used. Also write your name in the same document so that we know who the movie belongs to. Email the Word document
Send the Word document with your name, the title of the monologue and your YouTube link to info@actorsstudiostockholm.com.

4
Slutlig Antagningsomgång

Candidates who pass Competitions 1 and 2 will be invited to a final admission round. This includes a personal interview and may also include exercises in acting, movement, speech, improvisation and work on your audition monologue and/or movement piece.
