This May, Actors Studio Stockholm will offer a focused Technique & Text class for actors who want to deepen their process and strengthen their ability to bring text to life with clarity, specificity, and imagination. Working with monologue texts from Spoon River Anthology by Edgar Lee Masters and/or Working by Studs Terkel, students will explore beautifully written material that offers rich opportunities for character development and transformation. Through specifically identified activity work rooted in the Michael Chekhov and Uta Hagen systems, we will investigate how physical action, imagination, inner life, and clear choices can lead to more embodied and truthful work. In addition to monologue and character exploration, the class will incorporate relaxation and grounding work, along with other exercises designed to free and strengthen the actor’s instrument. This is a class for actors who want a deeper dive into process, text, and characterization, while developing practical tools they can return to again and again in their work.

In this class you will:

  • Work on a selected monologue from Spoon River Anthology or Working, developing a fully realized, specific character
  • Apply Michael Chekhov techniques (psychological gesture, imagination, atmosphere) to unlock physical and emotional life
  • Build Uta Hagen-based activity work, identifying clear actions, objectives, and behavioral truth within the text
  • Engage in relaxation and grounding exercises to free the body, voice, and impulse for more truthful performance
  • Rehearse and refine their work in class, receiving direct feedback and adjustments to deepen clarity, specificity, and embodiment
