Michael Chekhov Intensive: Character, Imagination & Atmosphere
This is a highly practical workshop designed around doing rather than discussing. Participants learn through experience, exploration, and application.
Working individually and as a group, we will investigate some of the most powerful elements of the Michael Chekhov Technique, including:
- Imagination as a creative partner
- Atmosphere and its influence on character and performance
- The body as a gateway to psychological and emotional life
- The relationship between thought, feeling, and action
- Creative flexibility and freedom in performance
- Character transformation through movement and embodiment
The focus throughout is on discovering what works for you as an individual actor while developing a deeper understanding of the technique through direct experience.
Areas of Exploration
Throughout the intensive we will work with:
Monologue and Character Development
Using monologues, poems, or short dramatic texts, participants will explore practical methods for creating rich, imaginative characters and fully realised performance worlds.
Atmosphere
Learn how atmosphere can become an active creative force, helping to shape character, relationships, space, and dramatic action.
Voice and Speech
Explore voice and speech as living, expressive tools that reveal character and support the creation of atmosphere, presence, and connection using Laban and Eurhythmy amongst other tools
Movement and Embodiment
Discover how everyday movement can be transformed into expressive stage action. We will explore rhythm, gesture, psychological movement, and the relationship between text, atmosphere, and physical expression.
Individual Guidance
Participants will have opportunities for personalised feedback and support throughout the training.
